Understanding the Struggle:

Signs to Look Out For

Embarking on the path to recovery from disordered eating requires recognising its varied manifestations. Loss of control, emotional turmoil, chaotic relationships with food, self-esteem issues, guilt, and temporary relief followed by negative emotions are common experiences. It’s crucial to understand these signs to navigate the complex landscape of disordered eating.

The Main Types of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders encompass various conditions, each with its distinct characteristics.

  • Anorexia Nervosa involves a fear of weight gain, leading to severe undernutrition.
  • Bulimia Nervosa centres around binge-eating episodes followed by compensatory behaviours.
  • Binge Eating Disorder involves consuming large quantities of food without compensatory actions.
  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder stems from limited eating patterns unrelated to body image concerns.
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders capture symptoms not meeting specific diagnoses but still causing significant distress.

If only eyes saw souls instead of bodies,
how very different our ideals of beauty would be.

Beyond Diagnoses:
Understanding Disordered Eating

Disordered Eating, a term inclusive of abnormal eating behaviours, affects physical and emotional well-being. Emotional Eating and Stress Eating involves using food to cope with emotions or stress. Yo-Yo Dieting describes the cycle of weight loss and regain. Self-sabotage entails behaviours hindering progress. These nuanced experiences highlight the importance of a tailored, compassionate approach to healing.

Exposure Therapy and Practical Support in Eating Disorder Treatment

By combining exposure therapy and practical support, I’ll empower you in your eating disorder recovery to reclaim a balanced lifestyle. Exposure therapy helps confront your fears, while practical support addresses the day-to-day challenges of managing disordered eating, fostering holistic healing.

Weight Management: A Compassionate Approach

Weight, eating, and body image concerns are deeply personal and often shaped by a complex interplay of emotional, psychological, and lived experiences. At The Hope Space, we recognise that exploring weight-related options can be especially sensitive and complex for individuals who are currently navigating, or have previously navigated, disordered eating recovery. If you would like support around pre- or post-bariatric surgery, GLP-1 medication, or your relationship with food and your body, please feel free to reach out.

ADHD and Disordered Eating

Many people are surprised to learn how closely ADHD and eating disorders can overlap. Difficulties with attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and interoceptive awareness (the ability to recognise hunger and fullness cues) can all shape a person’s relationship with food and their body. For some, this can look like chaotic or impulsive eating, bingeing, or using food to manage overwhelm; for others, perfectionism and rigid routines may drive restrictive patterns. Because these underlying mechanisms often go unnoticed, ADHD can be missed in individuals seeking support for eating difficulties. If you’re curious about how ADHD may be influencing your eating patterns or whether an assessment might be helpful, you can learn more on our ADHD Assessment page.
